How to Find Your Motivation

Have you ever seen someone work out at the gym with such dedication that you were slightly jealous?
Have you ever watched someone eat a salad while everyone else was busy eating chicken wings and pizza?
Have you ever seen someone accomplish a big goal that perhaps you'd like to achieve some day?
After witnessing these people do amazing things with such self-discipline and dedication, have you ever wondered how they found their motivation?
And if they can find it, can you?
How to Find Motivation
The answer is, of course, yes. You can set a goal and achieve it just as those people did. You can also have the self-discipline required to maintain the results you work so hard to attain.
Will it be easy? Probably not, at least in the beginning.
But you can do it, and you should do it. Make the big changes in your life that you desire.
Here are a few steps that you can use to find the motivation to make your dreams come true.
Find your Why
The first step of finding motivation to do anything in life is determining why you want to make it happen. I'm not talking about "because I want to lose weight" or "because I want to be rich." I'm talking about the reasons why you want those things. In order to find and keep the motivation required to make big changes in our lives, we must really dig deep.
Why do you want to lose weight?
Why do you want to become rich?
What would losing weight mean for your life and the life of those you love? What have you overcome so far that makes this goal meaningful to you.
When you are searching for your "why," keep asking questions and digging deeper until you feel intense emotion. There is a saying that goes "Unless your why makes you cry, you haven't found it."
Finding your "why" is vital because making big changes is not easy. We are hard wired to keep things comfortable and routine. Every time your mind and body resist the change you want, you must turn to your "why" to motivate yourself and maintain your resolve.
Take the First Step
Even when you identify why making a big change in your life is so important, it can be difficult to get started. You may feel compelled to start with a detailed plan or set a start date in the future.
Resist those urges!
Sometimes (most of the time), all we need to do is get started. Take that first step. Make a little bit of progress. That is all we need to build momentum.
Your first step doesn't have to be a big scary one. In fact, keep it as small as possible. What is one thing that you can do right now that is inside your comfort zone?
Once you make the first step, the next steps will begin to fall into place. You'll experience a confidence boost. And the motivation to take the next step will come a bit easier.
What to do when your Motivation Fades
It doesn't matter how strong your "why" is or how much you want the end result, at some point along the journey, your motivation will fade. It happens to everyone.
You may wake up and feel like skipping a workout. You may feel like cheating on your diet. You may feel like taking a day off of work or throwing in the towel on a major project.
Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to move past this temporary loss of motivation and get yourself back on track.
1. Realize that your feelings are normal. Don't beat yourself up or think that you don't stand a chance because you want to quit sometimes. This is a normal part of the progress. In fact, it is a good sign that you are pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.
2. Reconnect with your "why." Take a little bit of time and get back in touch with the deep reasons why you want to achieve your goals. What is the inner driving force? What type of lifestyle do you want to avoid going back to? What is at stake if you don't achieve your goal? What is at stake if you do?
3. Take a breather. Sometimes, all we need is a little break. We are all human after all. If you've been working really hard towards something, maybe you are due for a couple days away. For example, if you've been writing every day trying to punish a book or if you've been running 6 miles a day for the past 3 months ... you may just need a short hiatus. Take a break for a couple of days. Get some rest. Reset and then start again.
